Jez Corden, writing for Windows Central, believes that Square Enix is in talks to bring Final Fantasy VII Remake, originally scheduled for release on PlayStation 4 in 2020 (and later on PlayStation 5 and PC in a slightly expanded format), to Xbox.
Corden chatted with Rand Al Thor on the latest Xbox Two podcast, and the two touched on a number of topics related to the Redmond platform. For example, Xbox Developer_Direct ’24, Bethesda and MachineGames’ Indiana Jones game (the possible title of which we wrote about in the news a while back!), and some third-party titles all came up. That’s how the pair finally touched on Final Fantasy VII Remake, which we’ve known for a long time had PlayStation 4 exclusivity for a year, so it was no coincidence that the PC port finally made it to gamers in 2021.
But we haven’t seen the game on Xbox platforms since then! That may change, but Sony and Square Enix are not very keen on agreeing to an Xbox series (and Xbox One?) version(s) anytime soon either, with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second chapter of the project (which surfaced in the news yesterday), coming to PlayStation 5 in just over a month.
“I have tentative evidence that there are discussions about Final Fantasy VII for Xbox, but I agree with you that [both Sony and Square Enix] wouldn’t want to take the shine off Rebirth right now by releasing Final Fantasy 7 Remake for Xbox, but I think it will happen,” Corden said in the video.
The question is when the port(s?) will be released, because if Sony and Square Enix don’t really agree to it, Microsoft will have to open their wallets to pay off the Japanese publisher (they’ve got plenty of money… if it was $68.7 billion for Activision’s Blizzard King, that’s chump change). Will they release it on Xbox One? That would be impressive, considering that the platform will be 11 years old this year.
