MOVIE NEWS – Pablo Schreiber, who also plays the Master Chief of Halo season 2, responded to the criticism surrounding the decision to remove the character’s helmet.
Halo Season 2 actor Pablo Schreiber has responded to criticism of Master Chief’s helmet removal. He explained why the series made this decision. The hero played by Schreiber in Halo Season 1 took off his helmet in the first episode. Breaking with this tradition of games.
This approach continued into Season 1 of Halo, as the character was regularly seen without a helmet. This surprised some fans, considering that Master Chief is famous for never taking off his helmet during the Halo games. This and other criticism led Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto to disavow the series. He stated that it was “not the Halo I made”.
Following the backlash, some fans wondered if Paramount would change its strategy with Halo Season 2; however, this may not be the case, as Schreiber has confirmed that Master Chief’s face will be shown.
In an interview with GamesRadar’s SFX magazine, Schreiber defended the decision to remove the MC’s helmet in the Halo TV series. “People who don’t feel the helmet was necessary to come off, they’re at such an early conception of what the show could be,” he said. “In order to examine the discrepancy between these two versions of the character [Chief and John-117], you can’t tell that story without taking the helmet off. If you don’t agree with the helmet coming off in the show, you don’t like our show. So, there’s no point discussing it.”
In a previous interview with SFX Magazine, Halo showrunner Steven Kane claimed that it couldn’t be done visually without removing Master Chief’s helmet. He drew parallels between the series’ helmeted approach and the books’ unfettered access to the MC’s emotions. Explaining that both try to tell the story of the person inside the helmet. However, some fans believe that the Halo series took this approach too far.
Fans have requested several changes for future Halo seasons, including making Master Chief less emotional.
In the Halo games, MC has mostly come across as a stoic, determined superhero. Not a controversial personality. However, to be fair to the series, this wasn’t always the case throughout the games. This is seen in Master Chief’s emotional struggles with Cortana. Additionally, the books shed light on MC’s traumatic upbringing and complex emotional state. Paramount’s Halo series still seems to favour a dynamic approach. This can be difficult without regularly removing the Chief’s helmet. However, some fans are understandably frustrated with this decision.
A Halo Infinite writer advocated removing Master Chief’s helmet. He elaborated that Spartans taking off their helmets are regularly seen in the books. This is consistent with the story.
Schreiber’s recent comments aren’t the only time he’s defended the Halo series’ decisions. He previously claimed that some fans hated the series before they even watched it because of its approach. But he will continue to work to make the Halo series the best it can be. Hopefully, Halo Season 2 will be more satisfying for fans.
