Metro Awakening, a collaboration between Vertigo Games and Deep Silver, is coming in 2024.
The Ukrainian studio 4A Games was founded seventeen years ago. From the beginning, they were entirely devoted to the Metro franchise, which was licensed as a post-apocalyptic shooter franchise from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Now, this saga expands further with Metro Awakening, the franchise’s first virtual reality game. Developed by Vertigo Games in collaboration with Deep Silver, the title promises to be terrifying, and it looks it.
Five years after the release of Metro: Exodus, which was already a breakthrough in the franchise with its open-world approach interspersed with “walker” missions, the franchise continues its significant evolution and now jumps straight into the world of virtual reality.
Although the trailer presented at the State of Play was short, it is more than enough to raise the expectations of franchise fans.
Will the new Metro Awakening be a VR-only game?
Metro Awakening is not just a spin-off with a short story and limited gameplay. But a complete game and triple-A production are available for PS VR2, Meta Quest 2 and 3, and Steam VR. It is an origin story that takes place before the events of Metro 2033. It offers both a new perspective for Metro fans and a fantastic starting point for gamers new to VR. At least for those willing to don a gas mask, the PlayStation blog explained.
“Set in 2028, the all-new story is penned by series creator Dmitry Glukhovsky. You play as Serdar, a doctor searching for his wife among the claustrophobic, irradiated metro tunnels of post-apocalyptic Moscow.”
“As Serdar ventures deeper into the Metro his courage and sanity will be tested by the supernatural forces he encounters, and will set in motion the events that lead to his spiritual awakening as something else entirely…”
Beyond the story, the title defines itself as a first-person adventure game. As a game mechanic, it mixes survival, stealth and combat. And the best thing is that you don’t have to wait long for the final version! After all, those responsible for the project plan to release it sometime in 2024.
It is true that the post-apocalyptic vision of Russia by the author Dmitry Glukhovsky, responsible for the novels on which the Metro games are based, is striking again. However, the game’s existence was hinted at on social media only a few days ago. Vertigo Games and Deep Silver’s new project leaked a few days ago, and while it wasn’t clear if it would be a VR-exclusive game, we now know the answer.
