The French publisher has also had to adjust its strategy slightly compared to the past.
In its quarterly report, Ubisoft confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, set in feudal Japan, will be released no later than March 31, 2025, meaning it will definitely reach players by the end of the next fiscal year. In May, the publisher will announce its game slate for the fiscal year that begins in April 2024 and ends in March 2025. Assassin’s Creed Codename Red and Star Wars: Outlaws are sure to be on the “premium” side (i.e. they will be paid games), while The Division Resurgence and Rainbow Six Mobile are already confirmed as free-to-play titles. It’s also official that Valiant Hearts: Coming Home, which is currently only available on iOS and Android, will be porting to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC by the end of March 2024.
Let’s also talk about VR. Yves Guillemot, co-founder and current CEO of Ubisoft, was asked during the Q&A session: what do you think about the emergence of new VR formats (Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3) and what are Ubisoft’s plans for development on VR platforms? In his answer, Guillemot confirmed that they are not committed to devoting too many resources to VR, as sales of Assassin’s Creed: Nexus VR (launched on Meta Quest in November) have been disappointing.
“We were a bit disappointed with what we were able to do in VR with Assassin’s Creed. It did well and it continues to sell, but we thought it would sell more, so we are not increasing our investment in VR at the moment because it needs to take off. We were very impressed with what Apple came up with, and we think it’s fantastic hardware, but we continue to look at this VR business as something we need to look at but not invest too much in until it grows enough,” Guillemot said.
In 2022, Ubisoft canceled Splinter Cell VR (which was in development at Red Storm), and we’ve been waiting for Sam Fisher’s return ever since…
