Will Microsoft Not Be Fully Multiplatform?

Not all Microsoft games will be available on other platforms, according to an insider.

Sony is used to this: it took them more than two decades to bring their internally developed first-party games to the PC after the PlayStation platforms. Only one of their IPs is multiplatform, their annual sports game MLB: The Show, which will be on Xbox Game Pass (we wrote about it recently). Microsoft might start to open up in other directions (=PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch)…

“I want to emphasize that even though I heard something similar, this should still be treated as a rumor. As I said, I didn’t want to report it until a release window was finalized, so plans are still subject to change. Microsoft will make selected games multiplatform. I have confidence in that. People are making wild assumptions that EVERY game will be multiplatform, which is not the case. Microsoft is also not going to get out of the hardware business. The multiplatform strategy is a slight shift in strategy where SOME titles will go multiplatform. Microsoft will keep high profile games exclusive,” wrote Nate the Hate on Twitter.

If this is indeed Microsoft’s stance, and it’s not bringing Starfield or Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to the PlayStation 5 (because there are compromises to be made with the Nintendo Switch; perhaps a successor to the Switch is a potential target platform! It seems counterintuitive that, say, Sea of Thieves or Hi-Fi Rush would be coming to rival platforms years later.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has already confirmed that there will be some sort of business development event next week. He didn’t deny the rumors, so it could be that Microsoft will actually talk about some of their games leaving the Xbox series and PC exclusivity behind. In particular, Hi-Fi Rush, which could be described as a rhythm game, would be excellent for the Switch…
