And Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, the developers of the game, admitted how happy he is to see one of the best (if not the best!) games of 2023 being praised on Valve’s platform.
So Vincke reads user reviews on Steam, but with over 500,000 of them, if he took five seconds to read one, the armor-clad CEO would have to read them non-stop for a month. And he couldn’t, but it’s true! After reaching the milestone, Vincke wrote on Twitter that 500,000 is a big number and he wishes he could be where everyone else is so he could shake their hands and chat with them about their adventures, but short of that, he just reads the reviews and is happy when he takes the time.
Baldur’s Gate 3 reached 500,000 reviews by the beginning of February, but Steam excludes users who did not purchase the game directly from Steam (activating a code purchased elsewhere, gifting) from this number, meaning that about 60,000 reviews have been removed from the site. With 560,000 reviews, Larian’s masterpiece has become the 25th most reviewed game on Steam (and in the best, overwhelmingly positive category!), and we don’t even see another 2023 title in the top 39, as last year’s second title is in 40th place (Lethal Company: 331552 reviews on Gabe Newell’s platform).
Counter-Strike 2 is at the top of the list, but that’s a bit of a skew, as it took over the reviews of 2012’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (and since it’s free-to-play, it’s no coincidence that it has 7.88 million ratings, with very positive reviews; CS2 has added about 42,000 reviews since its release last August). PUBG is in second place (2.3 million, with mixed reviews), and Dota 2 has made it to the podium (2.17 million, with very positive reviews).
Larian’s success is well deserved!
