MOVIE NEWS – The Equalizer writer Richard Wenk has revealed he’s been “tasked” with figuring out how to bring back the action franchise and Denzel Washington.
Last year’s action film The Equalizer 3 was announced as the final chapter in the saga of director Antoine Fuqua and star Denzel Washington. But writer Richard Wenk, who penned all three instalments in the Equalizer franchise, has now hinted that a surprise fourth film could be in the works.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Wenk said that while he felt the third instalment was the last and gave closure, he was now tasked with figuring out how the franchise could continue…
“I felt it was over. It felt like the final chapter for this guy. I don’t know where he would go after that. Though…[laughs] I’m now tasked with figuring that out.”
The Equalizer 4 would be somewhat of a surprise, given how adamant everyone involved was that the third film would be the last. But it will be less of a surprise when you consider that the film grossed $190 million at the box office worldwide.
Although Wenk has now been tasked with coming up with an idea for his 4th episode, he seems to be struggling a bit. In fact, he hinted to Empire that he might need a little help down the road…
“I may have to call you and ask you what you would like if you had to see another one.”
Antoine Fuqua has proposed an Equalizer prequel with a de-aged Denzel Washington
Vengeance finds its counterpart in The Equalizer 3, released last September. Since giving up his life as a government assassin, Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) is struggling to process the atrocities of his past. He finds special comfort in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed. He is surprisingly at home in southern Italy. But he discovers that his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses.
When events take a deadly turn, McCall knows what he must do: stand up for his friends and fight the mob.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Richard Wenk – who were behind all three films in the series – The Equalizer 3 stars Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, Andrea Scarduzio, David Denman, Sonia Ben Ammar, Remo Girone and Eugenio Mastrandrea.
Despite reports that Washington will be playing the titular avenging angel for the last time, Fuqua has previously hinted at a return. Even with a fourth film in which Washington would also star. Or perhaps with a prequel in which the Oscar-winning actor is digitally de-aged. However, not everyone is enthusiastic about the latter idea…
