Content for the second year will be inspired by previous episodes.
Criterion Games made a change in the fall: it was previously part of EA Sports, but Electronic Arts moved it to EA Entertainment. The team that created the Burnout episodes continues to support the development of Battlefield (they also took a break from working on Need For Speed Unbound to help create Battlefield 2042), so it’s not just the long-running NFS franchise that’s tied to them these days.
Need For Speed Unbound is getting another year of support (it’s due out in late 2022, and yes, it uses a live service model!) and is part of Electronic Arts’ way of celebrating the franchise’s 35th anniversary. Criterion plans to release the new content in four installments. The first period (February-April) will be Head to Head, the second (May-July) will be Drift & Drag (inspired by Need For Speed Underground), the third (August-October) will be Cops vs. Racers (inspired by Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit), and the fourth (October-December) has no name yet.
Each of the four updates will add at least one new game mode or feature to Need For Speed Unbound. There will also be at least two new fully customizable cars with multiple body kits. Starting with Volume 6, the developers are also adding a premium version of the Speed Pass (so there will be a paid Battle Pass) that will give you instant access to one of the new cars, plus the ability to unlock deep customization content. There will also be custom versions of the car, and the premium Speed Pass will have the best customization features each season.
There will also be events, Freedrive updates, weekly PvP playlists, challenges and bug fixes in the updates. Community feedback will also be taken into account, with improved telemetry (sending data home while you play) and a Player Council made up of NFS influencers and well-known members of the community.
