Hidetaka Miyazaki also talked about the state of the game industry, not just Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
In the video for the DLC, you could almost feel the 80s Hong Kong martial arts movies in Elden Ring. In an interview with Famitsu, Miyazaki said that the weapons and spells in the DLC will be what sells it, but he said that the weapons will be the main focus. There will be eight new types of weapons, and we can expect upgrades to the types already in the base game. For example, the ōdachi, a larger, heavier Japanese sword, is coming, but the gyakute ken, a sword with an inverted hilt, was also mentioned. Dagger throwing will also be available, and a double-bladed shield was shown in the trailer. There will be variety.
In an interview with IGN, Miyazaki talked about how FromSoftware is in a good position because they’re hiring people for the long term, and they can end up as game directors as well. For Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, the director was Masaru Yamamura, who was the lead game designer on Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Miyazaki believes in educating, training and promoting developers because it’s a long-term investment.
“I am aware of the situation in the game industry, [it’s] quite distressing. I think it’s difficult for me to understand the exact circumstances there. I don’t want to get into specifics. I think we’re very blessed in the sense that we have a lot of eager junior developers who have grown [and] developed within the studio. [Some have reached these director positions. We have several of these up-and-coming directors that we’re able to delegate these projects to, and we’re able to have multiple projects going at the same time. What I see in this climate (at least for us) is a FromSoftware where games can be directed by others, not just me. I see this as a time for us to continue to grow and cultivate this talent and [release] these games for as long as we can,” Miyazaki said.
