MOVIE NEWS – A new update for George R.R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight series appears to reveal the start date of filming as the Game of Thrones spinoff expands its world.
The world of Game of Thrones continues to expand in the history of Westeros. Because the filming of the spinoff The Hedge Knight will begin in the summer of 2024. While the current prequel series, House of the Dragon, explores the fall of House Targaryen, the short anthology tale The Hedge Knight takes place just 90 years before the prequel series.
After the death of a knight errant, his squire, Dunk, dons his armour and possessions and sets off with his own newly recruited squire, Egg.
While House of the Dragon will return for Season 2 in 2024, ProductionList.com has released a list of the upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff filming schedule. The spinoff, which begins filming in June, will see the franchise return to its familiar studios and locations in Belfast, Ireland. Along with the listing, they also shared a brief synopsis for The Hedge Knight, which hinted at Dunk and Egg’s mission, location, and supporting cast:
“Before Game of Thrones, Ser Duncan the Tall, a brave but inexperienced knight, and his small squire, Egg, roamed Westeros during the Targaryen era. Their adventures feature great destinies, formidable enemies, and daring escapades in a time when dragons still roamed and Targaryens ruled.”
Will all future Game of Thrones spinoffs focus on Westeros’ past?
Despite the infamous reaction to the ending of Game of Thrones, it’s clear that audiences still have some affection for the world of Westeros. Thanks, for example, to the success of House of the Dragon. Accordingly, several spinoffs were given the green light. Among them are three animated series, one of which deals with the story of Corlys Velaryon’s nine journeys. The tale of Aegon’s conquest is similarly brought to life through a series of prequels.
While several prequel productions are in the works, a more ambitious, never-before-seen project is also in the works, which could prove difficult.
Set after the conclusion of Game of Thrones Season 8, a Jon Snow-centric sequel has been rumoured for quite some time. But it has not yet been officially given the go-ahead. Since creator George R.R. Martin is still working on volume 6, the author has yet to write about the events following the end of the conflicts in the novel series. Thus, due to the lack of source material and the attachment to the controversial ending, Jon Snow’s series may face complex debates.
The future of Game of Thrones is still seemingly rooted in Westeros’ past. But it’s clear that HBO wants to push new boundaries for the franchise. Unlike House of the Dragon, which focuses on warring royal families, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is meant to explore a character from humbler origins and his rise to fame. Offering a different perspective on the rich history of Westeros. So, with filming reportedly set to begin this summer, viewers may not have to wait long to find out which star will be taking on the roles of Dunk and Egg.
