Was The Creator Of NieR: Automata Hinting At A Sequel?

Yoko Taro may get the chance to make a sequel to the best-selling NieR: Automata.

During the Nier London Concert, the creator of the franchise may have hinted at such a possibility. Although NieR has been an IP since the PlayStation 3 (which originally started as a spin-off from another IP, Drakengard), it was the success of NieR: Automata that made the series popular (and nothing proves this more than its sales of over 8 million copies), and Taro’s unusual and eccentric game design and writing style played a big part in this. The franchise has recently received an anime adaptation as well as written stories and concerts, and this has left fans rightly asking: when is a new AAA game coming, either as a sequel to NieR: Automata or set in the same world?

Since the re-release of NieR: Replicant in 2021, Taro has often said that he’d like to make a new episode. But after Replicant, he has been working on other smaller projects. For example, he’s been working on mobile RPGs and the Voice of Cards series. However, he couldn’t forget NieR either, as a user named SanTheSly posted on the ResetEra forum what the London show was about.

Taro was accompanied by Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu. Taro said on stage that if the audience wanted a sequel to NieR: Automata, they would give the biggest ovation of the night so far. And they did, as the entire concert hall erupted in applause and cheers. This doesn’t mean anything in itself, but throughout the history of the show, the word REPENT has come up in the dialog several times, but the last time it was listed as R3PENT. This is a reference to the lettered endings of NieR: Automata, and the number 3 may indicate that a third major NieR episode is in the works.

Square Enix is hopefully up to something, but since Taro worked with PlatinumGames on NieR: Automata, this may change.
