It is rumored that Square Enix is not only working on a remake of Final Fantasy VII, but also on modernizing another part of the franchise.
In terms of size and budget, Final Fantasy IX Remake will not be on the scale of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Rebirth, or the yet to be officially named but we believe to be Reunion. On Twitter, Silknigth, who recently gave details about the announcement of the PC port of Ghost of Tsushima, wrote that Square Enix wants the remake to be as faithful as possible to the original, but that the Japanese company wants to do this with a more modest budget.
The remake has been rumored to be in development for some time, but Silknigth is unaware of any changes to the project. Square Enix originally planned to release it on Nintendo Switch, but may have scaled it up to the Big N’s next platform, but that’s understandable as he doesn’t expect any official announcements regarding Final Fantasy IX Remakes in the short term. This statement is interesting though, as last year another insider claimed that the game was essentially ready for release.
Final Fantasy IX Remake was also revealed as a result of the big GeForce Now leak, and on that list were a ton of games that have since been announced by developers/publishers or have already been released. And because of this, it’s likely that IX is really in the works, going back to the traditional path after Final Fantasy VIII (because VIII was a huge departure from the franchise in many ways, like leveling up was punished by the game for most of the story, and learning spells wasn’t just a matter of leveling up, but of stealing them from your opponents…).
Final Fantasy IX Remake is not official yet. If the game has indeed made it to the Switch’s successor, we’d guess it’ll be one of the console’s launch titles…
