Dungeons & Dragons titles based on the Wizards of the Coast brand will visit other areas of the gigantic universe…
It is known that Wizards of the Coast, the owners of the Dungeons & Dragons brand, want to enter the world of video games with several games. What’s more, we know that Hasbro’s subsidiary intends to start up to 40 (!) new projects based on the success of Baldur’s Gate 3! The characteristics of each initiative are not yet known. But one thing D&D officials want to make clear: they don’t necessarily have to focus exclusively on the Forgotten Realms, that is, the area where the events of Larian Studios’ RPG take place.
This is suggested by Dan Ayoub, head of digital product development at Wizards of the Coast, in a conversation with GameSpot during the Game Developers Conference.
Specifically, the conversation revolves around Faerun, the supercontinent set in the Forgotten Realms universe. “You’ve obviously hit the nail on the head—it’s certainly the most popular area,” the pro begins. When you see people looking for forms of expression that they know [from the world of D&D], that’s a big part of it. We’re going to play on the edges. I can’t say more than that.”
Of course, this raises many questions about Wizards of the Coast’s plans for video games. It’s true that the Forgotten Realms is established as the most well-known universe. But Dungeons & Dragons offers different areas, “worlds”. These include Eberron, Dragonlance, Ravenloft and many more. Therefore, we are talking about a significant expansion on all official levels of the D&D brand.
When will we learn more about the Dungeons & Dragons games?
In addition to detailing the worlds of possible locations for the next Dungeons & Dragons adventures, the interview also touched on Wizards of the Coast’s strategy when it comes to communicating the projects. “We definitely have a roadmap that stretches pretty far out in time, with pencilled-in dates for when we think [the games] will come. And as we do project updates and team stuff, we’re constantly evaluating and reevaluating.”
“Probably based on what has already been announced, you can guess a little how the machine will start,” continues Ayoub. “But we haven’t set a date yet, but that date will come when we feel enough confidence.”
