Will Call of Duty Use AI-generated Backgrounds in the Future?

According to a job posting, be prepared for Call of Duty to start using AI in one aspect, so if you’re not careful during the quality control phase, you could end up with some pretty strange results.

Treyarch’s first game, Olympic Hockey ’98 for the Nintendo 64, did not use AI. The studio has been involved with Call of Duty since 2005, when they released Call of Duty 2: Big Red One (a console-exclusive side story to Call of Duty 2), but the franchise has been the studio’s sole focus since 2008, when they began work on Call of Duty: World at War. Since then, they’ve released ten games, including all of the Black Ops titles.

On Twitter, however, they posted a job ad that, again, is a nod to the future of artificial intelligence: “Treyarch is looking for a talented 2D Artist/Animator to join our in-house team to deliver a variety of dynamic content types for our games. A successful candidate will be an artist skilled in digital illustration, motion design, and the use of generative AI tools.” Then, under the job description, Treyarch says that art assets created by human artists and content-creating AI will be “polished” by the successful candidate, who must be experienced in Stable Diffusion, Vizcom, Dall-E, or similar AI image creation software, and also be talented in creating traditional digital art.

So Call of Duty has started to look at AI, which raises some questions. For example, is this going to put people out of work? Because they will need fewer artists, and so they will have to pay fewer wages, which will allow management to line their pockets on the grounds of cost efficiency, because they will be able to make more profit with less expenditure…

And this is a move that all major IPs are probably considering.
