Is Nexon Working on a Game of Thrones MMO?

Making a game out of George R.R. Martin’s work is not easy (not many of them have been blockbusters), and Nexon has taken a risky step, even though the game has not yet been announced by the South Korean company.

The only Game of Thrones game that was more successful came from Telltale… but it only lasted one season and was canceled. That’s where Nexon comes in, with titles like Warhaven, Kartrider and the recent FPS with a decent track record, The Finals. Their MMO is said to be set in the North, as both Winterfell and The Wall are rumored to be in the game, according to Redanian Intelligence.

Chronologically, it is set somewhere around the fourth or fifth season of the series. Roose Bolton is already the Warden of the North and Jon Snow is still at the Wall with Sam Tarly. Perhaps other kingdoms will appear in the game as well. We may meet the characters mentioned above, but no matter who appears from the show, the actors will not be lending their voices to the MMO. At least, that’s what we’re hearing right now. Get ready for new voice actors with similar voices…

The game reportedly does not have a title yet. There will be a story mode, but it will only be playable online. You can create either a male or female protagonist, but whoever you don’t end up choosing will be a character that appears in the story. We’ve seen something like this in Mass Effect: Andromeda. It’s very similar in concept to The Elder Scrolls Online, but not much information has been revealed about the project. The identity of the main character is unknown, so it will probably be an original character. When will Nexon’s game be released? Not this year. It could be 2025, maybe 2026, but it’s also possible that it could be later, because it takes a long time to develop a game, especially for an MMO.

None of this is official yet, but so far it is clear that the IP is very risky. It is hard to imagine Game of Thrones as an MMO.
