The Super Mario Bros. Movie Did Something Special – It Even Surprised Its Creators!

MOVIE NEWS – Among the successes of 2023, not even Barbie could make more money for its producers than The Super Mario Bros. Movie!

2023 had a mixed performance in terms of theatrical releases. There were some ugly misses (right, Marvels…?) But what about the greatest hits? Deadline also broke down the biggest Hollywood milestones of the past year, and there is good news for Nintendo: The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the year’s highest-grossing cinema production.

Developed by Illumination (Universal Pictures), the film, as we now know, ended up being the most successful video game film of all time, as well as the second highest-grossing film of all time last year, after Barbie.

However, the development costs of the animated film are lower than those of the film starring Margot Robbie. According to Deadline, the Super Mario movie brought in $559 million, compared to Barbie’s $421 million. That’s not all. Apparently, even the makers themselves did not dare to hope that the cinema would do so well. Yet Nintendo has always dared to dream big…

Super Mario Bros. Rivals: The 10 Highest-Grossing Movies of 2023

It’s not the only video game industry presence on the list. Five Nights at Freddy’s is also among the 10 highest-grossing films of 2023. Without further ado, here’s Deadline’s full list:

  1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Illumination): grossed $559 million
  2. Barbie (Warner Bros.): grossed $421 million
  3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Sony Animation): grossed $328 million
  4. Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (Nickelodeon): grossed $204.5 million
  5. Oppenheimer (Universal): grossed $201.9 million
  6. Wonka (Warner Bros): grossed $182 million
  7. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour: grossed $172 million
  8. Five Nights At Freddy’s (Blumhouse Productions): grossed $161 million
  9. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (Marvel Studios): grossed $124 million
  10. Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie (Spin Master Entertainment): grossed $114 million

With such commercial success of Super Mario Bros. The Movie, as well as its indirect success in boosting video game sales, it’s no surprise that Nintendo would like to continue to work with Hollywood on new projects. Because the Legend of Zelda live-action movie has already been announced…
