Mat Piscatella, director of Circana, confirmed that Xbox Series X/S sales were 13% lower than Xbox One sales during the same period of its life…
One of the most important markets for the gaming industry is the United States. Mat Piscatella, director of Circana, provides the latest data every month. Today, we know more precisely how the current generation consoles, i.e. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, are selling. A few weeks ago, we reported that the sales of the two platforms would not even make AMD happy in 2024, but the situation is different in the long term.
To celebrate, Piscatella posted his usual analysis of the top-selling games, consoles and accessories in the US for the month of April on his X/Twitter account.
One of the most striking details was that “on a time aligned basis”, PS5 sales in the US were 8% higher than PS4 sales during the same period. That is, after more than 40 months. We’ve known this for a few weeks now, but we didn’t know how Microsoft was doing with the Series X/S.
According to an analyst at Circana, “Xbox Series sales are 13% lower than Xbox One and slightly behind Xbox 360.” Still, Piscatella says in another post that “the One had a strong start with a not-so-great finish, while the 360 had a decent start with an amazing finish.” It’s still unknown “what’s going to happen with the X/S series this holiday season,” but it’s inevitable that “PS5 is currently the US market leader by a significant margin,” he confirmed in another tweet.
Here’s how PS5, Xbox, and Switch sales will look in April 2024 in the US
Total spending by US gamers is down 3% from last year. Despite this, the PS5 is also the number one console in terms of revenue and sales. Behind it is the Switch. The latter is the second in the number of units sold. It is the third in dollars. While the Xbox Series X/S is the least sold, it is the second highest-grossing console in April 2024 in the US.
On a time aligned basis, US unit sales of PS5 hardware are trending 8% ahead of PS4, while Xbox Series is trailing Xbox One by 13%, and remains slightly behind Xbox 360. Source: Circana Retail Tracking Service.
