MOVIE NEWS – Venom 3 (aka Venom: The Last Dance, officially) left Marvel fans confused by giving us the first full look at Tom Hardy’s anti-hero’s last outing.
Venom 3 (Venom: The Last Dance) ends Tom Hardy’s time as Eddie Brock in Sony’s fractured Spider-Man universe. But the first trailer managed to cause more confusion than excitement among fans. There are many things in the first look at Venom’s third outing that fans should take as a sign of a sweeping finale to the trilogy that keeps Sony’s Marvel franchise alive. Instead, however, many fans were left with a sense of impending disappointment.
The trailer starts off pretty well, several thugs attack Hardy’s Eddie, and Venom brutally helps him deal with them.
However, this is where things get a little confusing for those who have followed Spider-Man’s many big-screen adventures, as well as the history of the MCU. The trailer also features two familiar Marvel faces in, Rhys Ifans and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Their presence in the film has made fans question what exactly is going on in Venom 3.
Ifans previously played Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man and provided the character’s voice in Spider-Man: No Home. And Ejiofor played Karl Mordo in the Doctor Strange franchise.
Since the two actors have such prominent and recent roles in the MCU, it’s a surprise that it looks like they’ll be playing completely different characters in the new Venom movie.
While Ifans is currently only cast as “Hippie,” Ejiofor’s character appears to be part of a group that fights intergalactic threats similar to Venom. In one moment in particular, Ejiofor appears to collect a small piece of Venom left behind at an MCU bar in the aftermath of No Way Home. If true, it may come as a big disappointment to fans who were expecting this little moment to lead to much more. All things considered, the reactions are not exactly positive. And this may rightfully worry Sony after the recent Marvel movies.
Sony’s Spider-Man universe may fail without the success of Venom 3
From the moment Sony released the trailer for Morbius, the allusion to a direct Spider-Man connection has fans hyped for a film series that would run alongside the MCU and even bring back Andrew Garfield as an iteration of the web-slinging marvel.
However, when the movie arrived, all references to Spider-Man were gone, replaced by a strange cameo from Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes, aka Vulture.
Since then, the franchise has struggled to connect with audiences, leading to several major box office flops. Madam Web’s premiere in January hit another low, with terrible reviews and record-low box office receipts. Now, Sony is looking to Venom: The Last Dance to deliver a much more profitable release. Previous instalments in the Venom franchise have done quite well in terms of revenue. However, the critics were not kind to these films either.
If Venom 3 doesn’t hold up, it doesn’t bode well for the already delayed release of Kraven the Hunter, which is coming this December.
The trailer for Venom: The Last Dance brought about a massive shift in fan expectations regarding potential MCU connections. Moreover, even relationships within Sony’s own franchise. It is certain that Eddie Brock and Venom’s journey will end on October 25th, when, after the theatrical release, either downfall or glory awaits him…
