As the gaming industry continues to struggle, Behaviour Interactive has laid off 135 employees in just six months.
The studio, known for Dead by Daylight, has made strategic changes to grow in the future, building on the company’s historical strengths and creating an ambitious vision for Behaviour Interactive’s future success. In other words, more people are being laid off. From 575 employees five years ago, the company now employs around 1300, but the unprecedented popularity of the games industry has created unprecedented competition.
“In this challenging environment, Behaviour has refocused on its historic strengths. These include the company’s leading position in horror games, its production expertise and its thirty-year history of providing exceptional service to its development partners. To pursue this clarified vision, Behaviour will implement several strategic changes to its corporate structure to better differentiate its product, production, business development and marketing resources. As a result of these changes, the company will reduce its team by up to 95 employees, 70 of which are based in Montréal,” Behaviour Interactive wrote.
The cuts will not affect the development of Dead by Daylight (DbD). The casting of Frank Stone (DbD single-player spin-off), developed by Supermassive Games, and Behaviour’s Meet Your Maker (base-building game) will continue as before. “While the changes to our structure and strategic vision have resulted in difficult decisions, we are confident that these decisions will position us for continued success. As we enter the next phase of Behaviour’s growth, our commitment to excellence in our products and workplace culture remains steadfast,” wrote Rémi Racine, co-founder and CEO of Behaviour Interactive.
We last heard from Behaviour in January that they had laid off 40 people due to changing market conditions, so this isn’t the first time they’ve done this. Avalanche Studios Group was recently in the news for layoffs and who knows who will be next.
