Call of Duty: Black Ops 6: How Does Game Pass Affect Treyarch in Development?

With Treyarch now under Microsoft, following the Redmond tech giant’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, it was only a matter of time before they pulled the trigger on Game Pass.

So Call of Duty, which has been breaking sales records, is taking a risky step this year, as this year’s installment will be moving to Xbox Game Pass from launch. But how will that affect development? Yale Miller, Senior Development Director at Treyarch, explained in detail in an interview with VGC.

“We haven’t known about Game Pass for a long time. It was something that we were wondering if it was going to happen or not. From the beginning, with Black Ops 6, we definitely thought that it’s going to be a long time since players have played a Black Ops game. So whether it’s Zombies – this big epic experience with huge questlines and a great story – there’s a lot of players who just don’t know, who have never played a round-based zombie experience. So how do we teach people that with multiplayer and basic movement stuff? There’s a lot to show players, so we’ve been thinking about how to get players involved from the beginning.

Since we found out about Game Pass, we’re looking at those things again. Hopefully there will be more players than ever before, at least we’re trying. We think we’ve made a cool game that’s fun to play, that actually has a really wide variety of experiences for a lot of different players. So how do we make it clear to players how to get in, how to experience it, how to find the fun for them and make it clear that “hey, this mode is about this and this is about that”? And even in multiplayer, we have party modes and a lot of other things that we do, so how do we make it clear to players who may not have played Call of Duty before that ‘here’s what’s on offer and here’s how to access it,'” Miller said.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be released on October 25th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Nintendo Switch…?
