MOVIE NEWS – Doug Liman hinted at a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, and Warner Bros. wants to reunite Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt…
The long-awaited Edge of Tomorrow sequel got a promising update with the help of director Doug Liman. Because he revealed that Warner Bros. Pictures is “continually in talks” with the project in hopes of reuniting the filmmaker with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt to get it done finally. Liman recently told Total Film that “there is no better compliment” than when audiences and studios want a sequel to a film you made.
The recent Road House remake is also among the projects that moviegoers and studio bosses want more of.
“I do think there’s probably no better compliment to a movie than people wanting for there to be a sequel. Road House – there’s call for a sequel. Edge of Tomorrow, there’s no better compliment than Warner Bros. constantly bringing up, ‘Will you go and make another one of these?'”
Released in 2014 and based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s 2004 Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill, Edge of Tomorrow is set in a near future in which an alien race has launched a relentless attack on Earth that no military unit in the world can defeat. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day in combat when he is accidentally thrown into a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes. But he is inexplicably caught in a time loop – forced to relive the same brutal battle over and over again, fight and die over and over and over and over.
The critically-acclaimed Edge of Tomorrow 2, which grossed more than $370.5 million worldwide, has been in development since 2015, but has been stalled due to the busy schedules of Cruise and Blunt, with the latter even writing that a sequel would likely be “too expensive.”
However, Cruise recently signed a new contract with Warner Bros. As such, they “co-develop and produce the original and franchise motion pictures,” and Cruise recently took to social media to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary. Maybe Edge of Tomorrow 2 will finally be finished?
According to Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow 2 would be very different
The details of Edge of Tomorrow 2 are not yet known. But if the film does make it to the big screen, Liman revealed that the sequel will likely be very different. Because the filmmaker is “not the same” as he was a decade ago.
“Tom and I recently rewatched The Edge of Tomorrow together… I hadn’t watched it since it came out. And I have a very short attention span and memory. I wasn’t able to watch it entirely as a viewer, but I was definitely also not the filmmaker anymore.”
