The Sims 5, or Project Rene, has been canceled, according to a source, which is very typical of Electronic Arts, who have thrown a lot of studios and IPs in the trash over the past few decades!
Project Rene was announced during a Behind the Sims show in 2022. The public was then told that this would be the next installment in the franchise, The Sims 5. Since the release of the ever-expanding The Sims 4 (the latest addition, Lovestruck, arrives on July 25th…), players have often commented on what missing features should be brought back. Maxis had plans: The Sims 5 would have an open world, and based on the gameplay, it seemed like the studio was on the right track…
But now we hear on Reddit that The Sims 5 is gone! The developers who were working on it are now focusing on The Sims 4, so the key people for the fifth installment have probably left. Project Rene’s lead game designer has moved on to The Sims 4, and the lead character artist has left Electronic Arts. According to a screenshot on their LinkedIn, The Sims 5 is marked as a canceled project. However, this is just speculation at the moment, so until Electronic Arts officially talks about it, it’s not confirmed what the situation is around the game.
The Sims 4 was released for PC in September 2014, followed by Mac in February 2015 and finally PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2017. So if you just look at the PC release date, it will soon be TEN years old! It will be quite sad if Electronic Arts ends up pushing developers back to this episode instead of Project Rene. It probably didn’t have enough monetization potential since Andrew Wilson’s people consider it a priority…
Anyway, all we can do is wait and see if Electronic Arts says anything. Until then, this is just a rumor.
