Nintendo Switch’s Momentum is Waning: It Won’t Catch Up with the PS2!

In its quarterly report, Nintendo released new figures for its hybrid platform that was launched more than seven years ago.

According to Nintendo, 143.22 million units of the Switch have been sold as of June 30. Of course, there is no figure for how many of those are Nintendo Switch OLED or Nintendo Switch Lite. In the last three months, 2.1 million Switch units have been sold, which is not a lot. More games have already been sold (30.64 million), bringing the total to 1266.46 million, or an average of 8.84 games per console.

With this result, the Nintendo Switch is still in third place, and it remains to be seen how the big N will catch up with the PlayStation 2, which has sold more than 155 million units in its lifetime. Also in second place is the hardware of the big N, albeit a handheld rather than a desktop console: the Nintendo DS has sold 154.02 million units, and even if we average 3 million units until April, the Switch can only manage over 150 million. That’s not a bad result either. Now, only a reduction in the price of the hardware can ensure a larger audience.

Let’s take a look at the top 10 list of best-selling in-house developed first-party titles:

  1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 62.90 million

  2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 45.85 million

  3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 34.66 million

  4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 32.05 million

  5. Super Mario Odyssey – 28.21 million

  6. Pokémon Sword / Pokémon Shield – 26.35 million

  7. Pokémon Scarlet / Pokémon Violet – 25.29 million

  8. Super Mario Party – 20.84 million

  9. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – 20.80 million

  10. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 17.61 million

This is where the big N usually reports the results of several more addresses, but now there are only two new ones. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Remake sold 1.76 million copies and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD sold 1.19 million copies.
