No one was expecting this completely unexpected closure, because it didn’t seem like the publication would be consigned to the graveyard so suddenly…
Game Informer was the longest-running video game magazine in the United States, but after thirty-three years, it’s been announced that it’s the end of the line: issue 367 will be the last, with Dragon Age: The Veilguard as the cover story (and some new details about the game surfacing in the meantime). The unexpected announcement led to the dismissal of the entire staff. They were certainly not prepared for this.
“After 33 exciting years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer. From the early days of pixelated adventure to today’s immersive virtual realms, we’ve been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers. Our presses may be shutting down, but the passion for games we’ve cultivated together will live on. Thank you for being part of our epic quest, and may your own gaming adventures never end,” the announcement reads.

According to Kotaku, the vice president of human resources at parent company GameStop announced in a meeting yesterday that the magazine would be shut down immediately (!!!) and that everyone would be laid off with severance pay. At least one employee was on his way to work somewhere when the team was informed of the totally unexpected Game Over. The closure will also severely affect the online content that has been on the web since the dawn of the Internet.
This shutdown was indeed completely unexpected. While it is true that the Internet is much more prominent today, it is still a different experience to browse something in print, say, on the toilet…
