Josh Sawyer would love to take on the development of a new Fallout, but he’d only do it if Microsoft agreed to his request.
Fallout: New Vegas was the exception in the last decade and a half, as it was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, not Bethesda Game Studios. Since then, Obsidian and then BGS have been acquired by Microsoft, so the two studios are now on the same team. Not surprisingly, Sawyer (who was the project coordinator, lead designer, and systems designer on Fallout: New Vegas) was asked if he would work on a new Fallout if Microsoft were in the market for one, given the interest in the franchise from the TV series…
“Sure. With any project, I think it has to do with, ‘What are we doing, what are the constraints that we’re working within, what am I allowed to do, what am I not allowed to do?’ I think with any IP, especially one that I’ve worked with before, the question is, what do I want to do this time that I didn’t get to do last time? And if those constraints are just really limiting, then it’s not very appealing, because who wants to work on something where the one thing they want to explore can’t be explored? I love the Fallout IP. I think there’s still a ton of stories that can be told in there and questions that can be asked about… society. But yeah, you know, every IP is kind of like that. Do you want to work on this or that? I don’t know. What are we allowed to do and what are we not allowed to do?” said Sawyer.
And this comment is very similar to what franchise co-creator Tim Cain said back in June (as we reported at the time). So Sawyer’s position, while a bit harsh, is understandable: he wants Microsoft to stop putting creative constraints on him. He wants to create something truly new, something worthy of the franchise, something he can look back on with pride.
Microsoft could give him a chance, couldn’t they?
