This time we don’t get a story set in the mid-20th century (or a little before, maybe after) from Hangar 13, the developer of Mafia III, because the story is set in an earlier time.
On the opening night of Gamescom, there were several announcements from Take-Two (they own 2K), including Borderlands… Borderlands 4, but this was the one everyone was waiting for. Mafia: The Old Country, not so much, but we’d already heard from Hangar 13 that Mafia 4 was in the works, and the publisher confirmed it during the opening show at the Cologne event. This time, we’re set in 1900s Sicily, giving us a glimpse into the origins of organized crime. The struggle in this dangerous and unforgiving era is combined with authentic realism and rich storytelling. According to the press release, this is what the Mafia is famous for.
“In the first three entries in the Mafia franchise, we introduced players to the world of the Mafia through brutal stories set in different time periods. In Mafia: The Old Country, we’re going back to the roots of what fans love about the franchise, crafting a deep, linear narrative with that classic Mafia feel, visiting a stunning new location, and delivering it all in a tight, focused package perfect for fans of immersive experiences,” said Nick Baynes, President of Hangar 13.
If you’ve missed out on the franchise so far, you can pick up previous episodes of Mafia on Steam at a significant discount until September 2. The first installment was released for PC in 2002 and made its way to PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2004, where it was subtitled Mafia: City of Lost Heaven. In 2020, a remake of this game was released by Take-Two (the developer was already Hangar 13, not Illusion Softworks; the creator of the franchise, Daniel Vávra, is now working on Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2).
We’ll hear more about Mafia: The Old Country in December (probably at The Game Awards). It will be released in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.
