Sea of Thieves Is Huge Success on PS5 – More Xbox Games Coming to Sony’s Console?!

Sea of Thieves has reportedly passed one million copies sold on PS5, which may support the raison d’être of the Xbox boss’s decision…

Microsoft’s Sea of Thieves has reportedly passed one million copies sold on PlayStation 5. According to sources at Windows Central, the Rare-developed game recently hit a major sales milestone on Sony’s console.

While Xbox hasn’t announced sales figures for the PS5 game, there are many signs that the $40 title has been performing strongly since its release in late April.

According to Sony, Sea of Thieves was the most downloaded PS5 game in May in both the US/Canada and Europe. It was among the top five downloaded games in June and remained in the top ten in July.

The pirate-themed co-op multiplayer game was initially released for Xbox One and PC in March 2018, when it became Microsoft’s first exclusive title to be released on Xbox Game Pass on the same day and time as its retail release.

Before the game’s release on PS5, Rare said that more than 40 million people had already played Sea of Thieves.

On Tuesday, Xbox confirmed that MachineGames’ Indiana Jones title will be coming to PS5 early next year, ater first appearing on Xbox and PC this December.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is the latest in-house Xbox game to be confirmed for PS5, following four multiplatform releases confirmed this year and Doom: The Dark Ages announced in June.

Following the announcement of Indiana Jones, Microsoft’s head of gaming suggested that it would make business sense to release more Xbox titles to other console platforms.

“Going to the PlayStation announcement, obviously, last spring we launched four games – two of them on the Switch, four of them on PlayStation – and we said we were going to learn,” said Phil Spencer. “I think at the Showcase I might have said that from our learning, we’re going to do more.”

“What I see when I look is that our franchises are getting stronger, our Xbox console players this year are as high as they’ve ever been, so I look at it and I say, our player numbers are going up for the console platform, our franchises are as strong as they’ve ever been… and we run a business.”

“So I look at this: how can we make our games as strong as possible, [ensure that] our platform continues to grow both on console, PC and cloud, and I think it’s just going to be a strategy that works for us.”
