On PC, at least, the game doesn’t seem to be attracting much interest, given the size of the audience there; days after its release, this is worrying…
We’ve already discussed Concord in more detail here, but we’ve already pointed out that the $40 price tag could be a drawback for Sony’s Live Service game. Unfortunately, there’s no way to check how many people are playing a game on the PlayStation Store, but for the PC port of the hero shooter genre, you can use SteamDB to see how many people were playing at the same time on the opening weekend…
697. That’s not a bad joke: Concord had 697 concurrent players! And let’s not forget that it’s usually during the opening days or weeks that a game sets records, so the number of players will only go down in comparison. By comparison, one of the biggest flops of 2023, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, had a bigger number, as it had a Steam record (set on May 25, 2023) of 758 concurrent players. That’s embarrassing because a live service game should have more than 697 players, otherwise, they won’t invest more time and money and then quickly throw the game in the trash!
Helldivers 2 has a similar price tag, but the genre is different from what Concord is offering. It had less MMORPG “plus” than, say, Destiny or Warframe, but was much more focused on development and storytelling, so Arrowhead’s game leaned towards Killing Floor in that respect. But Concord’s biggest problem will really be trying to stand out in an oversaturated genre.
Destiny, Overwatch, XDefiant, Apex Legends, The Finals, or even Valve’s VERY confirmed Deadlock – and these are just a few examples of games that are similar in style, and for many games there is no “price of admission”. But Concord does, and this is a game the developers have been working on for eight years. Really? What was released in 2016 that gave this genre a major boost (after 2007’s Team Fortress 2)? Overwatch…
