Although the studio has become independent from Activision Blizzard, Toys For Bob is still working on something with Microsoft, and we can already guess what they might be working on.
Unfortunately, it’s not Crash Bandicoot 5 (we recently reported that the studio had plans for that, but due to publisher greed they couldn’t make it happen), but another platformer beast. All of this can be gleaned from the Toys for Bob website. In May, the studio completely gutted it, as it was completely empty for months!
Now, four months later, they’ve relaunched the site with a brand new look. Toys For Bob is obviously very proud of their work on Spyro The Dragon and Crash Bandicoot. Both characters have a strong presence on the site, with Spyro and Crash appearing in several sections, and you can also see them at the top of the page, beyond the “Recent Games” section. There’s also a mystery toy that’s cloaked in purple (and has horns). Spyro is also purple and has horns…
It’s no wonder that many people think that Spyro could indeed return, as the Spyro license is also owned by Microsoft, after the Redmond tech giant acquired Activision Blizzard King for $68.7 billion, and Toys For Bob’s first independent game will be tied to Microsoft. If the studio is indeed groping for the dragon, it could at least give the team a new chance, as Crash Bandicoot 5 was supposed to feature Spyro as a playable character. That didn’t happen, of course, because the sales of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time didn’t reach the level Activision Blizzard had expected, so the publisher, then led by Bobby Kotick, quickly relegated the studio to a support team for Call of Duty…
Since Toys For Bob makes no mention of Call of Duty on their website, perhaps this gives an idea of how the studio felt at the time. Let’s hope they have something big in the pipeline!
