It’s possible that the successor to the Switch will resemble the handheld that came out after the Game Boy Advance, which could come as a surprise…
Gamesindustry editor-in-chief Christopher Dring spoke on the VGC podcast about what he’s heard from his sources. According to him, the Nintendo Switch 2 (that’s not the official name of the platform, of course, and we’ll have to wait a little longer for the big N to officially christen it) will be a dual-display product, but we don’t know exactly what that means yet. Either there will be two displays on the handheld, or just one, but the TV will also be used for gaming to really provide that dual-display experience.
This is similar to the Nintendo Wii U, a console that was released before the Switch and was a huge flop. Its unique controller, the Game Pad, was a tablet-like controller that had a display on it. Many first-party games developed in-house took advantage of this feature, but third-party developers didn’t do much with the Game Pad. But how would that work if the Switch 2 was used in handheld mode? If there is only going to be one screen on the device, then a second screen is not really an option.
That is why following the example of the Nintendo DS is an option. Launched in 2004, the platform was a huge success, even beating Sony’s handheld at the time, the PSP (PlayStation Portable), in terms of sales. That handheld had two screens (as the name implies: DS = Dual Screen), but this may not be the case, as earlier rumors suggested that the Nintendo Switch 2 could have an 8″ (20.32 cm) LCD display with a 120 Hz refresh rate.
All of this is not official yet, but Nintendo is slowly putting its cards on the table, as the platform is due in 2025 (it remains to be seen whether it will be early this year or possibly a little later in the spring).
