Spider-Man 4: New Director Revealed – It Won’t Be His First Foray into the MCU!

MOVIE NEWS – Spider-Man 4 reportedly looked at Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton…

Spider-Man 4 finally got a director and a familiar face from the Marvel Cinematic Universe! He is the director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Destin Daniel Cretton. The first three MCU Spider-Man films were directed by Jon Watts, but after the release of Spider-Man: No Home, a new director was sought to helm the next instalment of Spider-Man’s MCU adventure. It’s been nearly three years since No Way Home was released, and now it looks like Sony and Marvel are going full steam ahead.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed the news that Destin Daniel Cretton will direct the as-yet-untitled Spider-Man 4. After Shang-Chi, Cretton was also credited as the director of Avengers 5, when it was still under the title Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. But he stepped down shortly before Marvel fired actor Jonathan Majors. Cretton has become a big name at Marvel, as he will also be producing the upcoming Wonder Man series. Cretton is currently still busy directing Shang-Chi 2. But with Spider-Man 4 news, it now looks like the movie will have to wait. Because Sony and Marvel are making the next Spider-Man movie at an accelerated pace. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who wrote the scripts for the last three MCU Spider-Man films, are returning to write the movie.

Could Shang-Chi or Captain Marvel appear in Spider-Man 4?!

The fact that Cretton will now be directing Spider-Man 4 hints at some possible story possibilities. Brie Larson starred in her three previous films. Shang-Chi kept this tradition alive with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel cameo in the film’s post-credits scene. Other Avengers have already appeared in Sony’s Spider-Man MCU movies. Cretton could continue that tradition with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel appearing in Spider-Man 4.

It is also possible that Simu Liu will appear as Shang-Chi in Spider-Man 4.

Legend of the Ten Rings was a big hit in the MCU at the start of Phase 4. Many fans are disappointed that Marvel Studios dragged out the sequel for so long. Apparently, part of the delay was that Shang-Chi would have had a big role in Avengers 5 when Cretton planned to direct it. Now that plans for Avengers 5 have been scrapped, Shang-Chi 2 will likely be delayed further. So, there is hope that fans will see the character in Spider-Man 4. The two characters have a history in the comics, with Shang-Chi appearing in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics and the Spider-Island storyline.

Sony Pictures has yet to set a release date for Spider-Man 4. However, Disney pulled the July 26, 2026 release date intended for the Marvel Studios film. This may have happened so that Sony Pictures could present Spider-Man 4 on this day. This last weekend of July has already proven to be beneficial for Marvel Studios, as Deadpool & Wolverine produced an incredible box office success in the last part of the summer. They hope that the situation will be similar in the case of the new Fantastic Four, which will be presented on July 25, 2025. Since there is already a director, more news about what to expect in the movie will probably come to light soon. Including potential villains and whether the film will be a down-to-earth crime drama or another multiverse adventure…
