MOVIE NEWS – The director of John Wick is working on a new action thriller based on an original idea…
What do you get when you mix the punchy action of the John Wick franchise with a hard-hitting murder mystery? No, this isn’t the lead-up to a corny joke; it’s one of Chad Stahelski’s next movies. Stahelski, who previously worked as a stuntman and coordinator, rose to prominence as a director following the breakout success of the John Wick franchise. Now that Lionsgate’s highly profitable franchise has ended (at least for now), Stahelski is looking toward new projects, one of which forces the director to ask audiences, “who’s the culprit?”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chad Stahelski is working on a new action/crime thriller called The Professionals. Ross Perot originally outlined the film, but the script was further developed and completed by Madison Turner, another former stuntman. Stahelski and Perot aren’t the only stuntmen involved in the movie. After all, the film will be produced by the renowned action team 87Eleven (of which Stahelski is also a co-founder). If the crew at 87Eleven sounds familiar, it’s because they’re behind some of the most explosive action movies of recent years, including Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, and the aforementioned John Wick movies.
The Professionals has been described as a cross between the popular board game Clue and the John Wick franchise.
According to the film’s synopsis, the comparison is perhaps more literal than a general guideline. The film follows a team of assassins on a mission in the English countryside. When one of the assassins is killed (turns have already started), the other assassins must guess who killed the first assassin. Sound confusing? Good then. The Professionals combines the twisty thrills of the murder mystery genre with the “gung-ho gun-fu” action made famous by 87Eleven.
Chad Stahelski has lined up some major projects after John Wick
According to his IMDb profile, Chad Stahelski may be today’s busiest director. He currently has 11 upcoming projects listed in the film database. Moreover, many of these are already confirmed: they are in various development and production phases. The former stuntman-turned-director’s next project is the long-awaited reboot of Highlander. Henry Cavill will star in the new version, which is said to have “much better” action scenes than the original…we’ll see.
Chad Stahelski is also producing two video game adaptations. He will direct the film version of the popular samurai game Ghost of Tsushima. Little has been revealed about the film so far, but filming preparations are underway. Casting news may be announced soon. Another adaptation that has been linked to the director for some time is Rainbow Six. Very, very little is known about Rainbow Six, which is based on the video game series inspired by Tom Clancy’s novels since the project has not received a major update for some time. The film starred Michael B. Jordan when it was announced in January 2023. However, some believe the project has been quietly shelved.
