MOVIE NEWS – Venom: The Last Dance director Kelly Marcel has dropped some cryptic hints about the future of the Sony/Marvel franchise, stating that “there are lots of symbiote stories” left to tell beyond Eddie Brock’s journey with his alien counterpart. Speaking at New York Comic Con, Marcel, making her feature film directorial debut with Venom 3, also teased that we will be seeing a lot more of Knull, the god of darkness and creator of the symbiotes. Here’s what Marcel had to say about Venom’s future (via Variety).
“This is just the introduction to Knull. He’s a massive, massive character, so you can never be one-and-done with him. This is just a little taste of Knull. We get to meet him. What the future holds for him, who knows? The plot for Eddie and Venom closes here. But as you know, there are lots of symbiote stories in the canon. There are lots of places to go, and maybe there are a few Easter eggs here that might start that journey off.”
Following the success of the first Venom in 2018 (which brought in a monstrous $856 million at the global box office) and its 2021 sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Venom: The Last Dance will wrap up the Tom Hardy-led trilogy. Directed by Kelly Marcel, the comic book sequel stars Hardy alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, and Stephen Graham, and finds Eddie and Venom on the run.
“In Venom: The Last Dance, Tom Hardy returns as Venom, one of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters, for the final film in the trilogy. Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds, and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie’s last dance.”
Tom Hardy Says Goodbye to Venom
Tom Hardy also took the stage at the event, delivering an emotional farewell to the Venom character and franchise, saying he has “loved” playing the iconic Marvel villain-turned-antihero.
“It’s been 7 years doing this, it’s like I started the day 7 years ago & now it’s night time, it’s time to go to sleep… I’ve absolutely loved playing Eddie and Venom.”
To the disappointment of many fans, Hardy confirmed that Venom 3 would be his final film earlier this month. “That’s all she wrote for me and the big guy. We promise to make this the best of them all. We’ve loved making these. Thank you for your love and support – come join us for the Last Dance. For those of you that enjoy a good time from all of us in the team – Let us entertain you.” While this may be the end of the main series, it is possible that Hardy could return as the character again thanks to the wonders of the cinematic multiverse. Whatever happens with Hardy, it’s clear that Venom: The Last Dance won’t be the final chapter for the symbiotes.
