Digital Foundry Praises Horizon Forbidden West’s PS5 Pro Patch: “Honestly, it’s impressive”

John Linneman on the PS5 Pro patch: “It does justice to the game in a way the original modes didn’t.”

Horizon Forbidden West remains one of the most visually stunning video games, developed by Guerrilla Games, and it continues to captivate players. Recently, it received a significant PS5 Pro update, and the team at Digital Foundry took it for another spin. This patch seems to elevate the technical aspects of the game even further, providing a level of clarity and graphical quality that outshines the original modes.

Despite also launching on the PS4, Guerrilla Games’ open-world masterpiece has set a high standard for current-gen visuals. Digital Foundry, known for its technical analyses, was particularly impressed by this latest PS5 Pro patch, drawing comparisons to a high-end PC. As John Linneman expressed in a recent YouTube video, “I think they’ve probably achieved the best image quality I’ve seen in a console game. It’s really good.”

Digital Foundry’s Verdict on Horizon Forbidden West’s Graphics

“When you consider the density of the graphics and the amount of detail they contain, the way it resolves is so clear and attractive that it’s honestly breathtaking. It’s like playing on a high-end PC,” remarked Linneman (via Vida Extra). Regarding the PS5 Pro patch, he noted, “It does justice to the game in a way the original modes didn’t—especially compared to the original and updated performance modes.” Notably, the upscaling doesn’t use PSSR but rather Guerrilla’s proprietary technology.

These words might surprise some, but others will recall that Digital Foundry has previously praised Horizon Forbidden West, calling it the best-looking game of 2022. Regarding the recent remaster of the first installment, Digital Foundry pointed out that Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered resembles a Demon’s Souls-style remake more than a typical remaster, noting that “the changes are very significant.”
