Twenty-four Years Since the King of Cyberpunk RPGs Debuted – Warren Spector Saw the Future?!

Warren Spector looked back at the history of the iconic sci-fi saga…

Many gamers were disappointed by Embracer Group’s decision (now split into three separate companies) to cancel the Deus Ex game in development. We are talking about an emblematic saga that captivated thousands of users with its mechanics and dystopian world. Warren Spector made a surprising statement, emphasizing that the game fits into the current context of the planet. As he puts it, “if someone made Deus Ex today, it might be perceived as a documentary.”

He said this in an interview with PC Gamer, in which he also touches on the cancellation of Deus Ex, which was being developed at Eidos Montreal. “I really have no idea why Embracer would abandon the Deus Ex franchise, at least for now,” he says in the conversation. “From my perspective, the gameplay approach is still relevant, but the world and situation needs some updating.”

Spector didn’t “like trying to convince people to be interested in something,” so the plot of the first Deus Ex revolved around concepts that were very fashionable at the turn of the last century. “Y2K was around the corner, AI was becoming a thing, conspiracies were everywhere, terrorism was on the rise, bioengineering was in its infancy, techno-augmentation was in the works. All that stuff was floating around in the zeitgeist. Making a game about it was an obvious thing to do.”

Deus Ex really hit the nail on the head.

Although the cyberpunk theme hadn’t yet materialized, the world was changing rapidly, and many people no longer viewed RPGs as simple, unrealistic video games. “Frankly, if someone made Deus Ex today it might be perceived as a documentary. I wouldn’t make Deus Ex again as it was in 2000 when it could be read as a believable fantasy.”

Warren Spector Would Explore Other Themes in a New Deus Ex

This conversation gave us the opportunity to find out how Spector would approach the subject of a new Deus Ex game. Recalling what he had previously said, the expert said, “other concerns that would be more relevant, more pressing, more worthy of exploration”. PC Gamer explains that the father of Deus Ex utters these words as if he wouldn’t mind returning to his iconic franchise: “It’s always nice to visit your kids and see how they’ve grown up.”
