It’s been a few years since the Japanese studio released a remaster, and now we’re hearing again that a FromSoftware game might be getting a remaster.
FromSoftware has a decades-long history, but it was mainly in the 2010s that the Japanese studio became a mainstream developer. In 2011 (or 2009…?), a new genre was born with the release of Dark Souls (or Demon’s Souls before that), the third installment of which was the best-selling of the franchise, with 2016’s Dark Souls 3 selling over 10 million copies and still a fan favorite to this day.
Since then, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and especially Elden Ring have been even bigger hits for the Japanese studio, but Bandai Namco and FromSoftware are still looking to make some easy money. They already did so in 2018, when Dark Souls: Remastered was released, and now Nick Baker, one of the hosts of the XboxEra podcast, has said in the episode embedded below that Dark Souls III: Remastered is in the works. That would be strange, because if we’re expecting a new version, we’re missing the second part…
If the remaster comes, there are several things to be hopeful about. For one, we’ll get a higher resolution (it’ll probably be native 4K on the PlayStation 5 Pro), and the framerate could improve (true, it’s still 60 FPS on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, but that’s only at lower resolutions!) Since none of the current-gen consoles support resolutions higher than 1080p, because it’s code written for previous-gen hardware, a remaster would be perfectly logical for that reason (except that they’re skipping Dark Souls II). If a remaster does happen, an announcement could come in December, perhaps during The Game Awards. The remaster will likely be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, and Nintendo Switch. There may also be a port for the Switch successor.
This is far from official.
