The voice actor did not want to copy the voice of Harrison Ford from the movies in MachineGames’ timed Xbox exclusive, due out in a few days.
Originally, Troy Baker (known from many games: Booker Dewitt in BioShock, Joker in Batman: Arkham Origins, Samuel Drake in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: Lost Legacy, and Joel Miller in both The Last of Us) didn’t want to voice Indiana Jones because he felt he would be completely out of the loop.
Todd Howard, a developer at Bethesda Game Studios, was the producer of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and had a say in who would voice Indy. Howard felt that Baker would not be a good choice for the role. When they first sat down on a Zoom call, Baker said Howard just rolled his eyes and said he wouldn’t be in the game, and he didn’t think that would happen…
In an interview with GamesRadar, he also talked about why he didn’t want to do Harrison Ford’s voice in the game: “I originally passed [on the Indiana Jones role] because, to be honest, I was so scared that I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. And fortunately, [voice director] Tom Keegan saw past my insecurities and encouraged me to put myself on tape for this one. The beauty of this is that it’s not about ‘can you do a good impression’, it’s about ‘can you help us feel like this is an authentic Indiana Jones’. Because that’s at the heart of it: does this feel like an authentic Indiana Jones?” said Baker.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be released on December 9 for the Xbox Series and PC, but MachineGames’ game will also be available for free to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. It’s no coincidence that we wrote that it’s a time-limited Xbox exclusive, as it’s already official that a PlayStation 5 port will be released sometime in the spring (no doubt at the request of licensee Disney).
