The Witcher 4: Exploring Romance Options in CD Projekt RED’s Latest Game

Will CD Projekt RED (CDPR) leave out the romantic possibilities in Ciri’s adventures, or will it continue the tradition started by Geralt in the previous trilogy?

The Witcher has always been known for having romance as part of the gameplay, although it was a bit more crude in the first installment (where CDPR treated it as essentially a card collecting game… this was refined in the later two episodes). Only now does the franchise have a female protagonist, which puts a twist on the usual. Ciri is a popular character (and as we’ve written, she has new abilities), and although The Witcher 4 is still a long way off, CDPR has now revealed a few things about the game after its The Game Awards presentation.

Sebastien Kalemba and Malgorzata Mitrega, the director and executive producer of The Witcher 4, (also) gave an interview to GameSpot. According to Kalemba, there will definitely be romance in The Witcher 4 because it’s part of the way CDPR develops its games. It’s also part of human nature, and it won’t be possible to tell the whole story without romance. Mitrega added that it plays an important role in life, so it will definitely be part of the story. That’s why Kalemba claims that it won’t be in the game just for the sake of romance, i.e. it won’t be forced.

They want to make sure that it is both convincing and meaningful. The Witcher 3 set the bar pretty high, so fans will have high expectations for CDPR’s next game. Just don’t end up expecting too much from the audience, and that’s something the Polish developers can’t deliver. But it’s too early to speculate.

The Witcher 4 is being developed for consoles and PC, but we don’t know when or exactly when it will be released.
