Mateusz Lenart, the director of Silent Hill 2, has shared his ambitious dream of creating a Lord of the Rings horror game, going as far as pitching his ideas. Could psychological horror find a new home in Middle-earth?
The Silent Hill 2 Remake has earned praise for respecting its predecessor’s legacy while introducing modern psychological horror elements. This approach could reimagine other iconic franchises, including The Lord of the Rings, if its oppressive atmosphere and emotional storytelling were brought to Tolkien’s universe. Lenart’s ultimate dream? To create a horror game set in Middle-earth.
As the mind behind the Silent Hill 2 Remake, one of the most significant survival horror titles in recent years, Lenart recently revealed his fascination with merging horror with Tolkien’s world. Speaking to the YouTube channel Bonfire Conversations, he shared his admiration for Tolkien’s works and disclosed his desire to develop a horror game based in Middle-earth, even mentioning that he has already presented some concepts.
“Don’t think I haven’t pitched these ideas,” Lenart said at around the 32:50 mark of the interview. His vision involves reinterpreting familiar elements of Tolkien’s world from a darker perspective. Films like The Lord of the Rings have already hinted at horror in scenes such as Shelob’s pursuit of Frodo or the Nazgûl stalking the hobbits. Expanding on the terrors of Moria could also be an intriguing possibility.
A New Lord of the Rings Trilogy in the Works?
Earlier this month, reports surfaced of ambitious plans to bring The Lord of the Rings back to cinemas. Both Warner Bros. and the writers are reportedly considering a new trilogy. Philippa Boyens, who contributed to both the original and new films, has expressed interest in creating three more movies. “There are still countless stories to tell, and I know of some truly fascinating ones. Some could fit perfectly into the epic trilogy format we saw in the original Lord of the Rings [and The Hobbit],” she shared.
