Funcom has released statistics about Dune: Awakening, a survival MMO, and the results are quite surprising!
Arrakis, the fictional planet, is extremely dry, so its inhabitants wear a special suit that turns their sweat, urine, and feces into drinking water. When people die (or are killed), their moisture content also turns to water. Dehydration (or dehydration, whatever) isn’t the only danger in Duke: Awakening, but it’s considered a pretty big one. According to Funcom’s blog post, NPCs caused the most deaths in the game’s closed beta (58% of deaths were caused by them).
Sandworms came in second (27%), followed by dehydration (22%). Water is scarce on Arrakis, so hydration has to be handled differently. Not exactly clean solutions. In Dune: Awakening, there are systems where you can extract a few things from dead creatures. At the simplest level, you take a rusty spear, stick it into the body of your defeated opponent, suck their blood into a bag, and then chug it, although back in March, game director Joel Bylos said that wasn’t really for us.
It is healthier to transport the blood to our base and then pour it into a blood purification machine. It will then be filtered to give you clean water, and you won’t have to worry about what questionable source you’ve taken the fluid from. According to Fncom, NPCs are not the only source of blood, as it can also be taken from animals. According to Funcom, blood has been taken from nearly a hundred muad’dibs (the cute little mouse-kangaroo creatures of Arrakis).
This is how the term “survivor” came to be used in the game’s genre. In a game like this, it’s really important that your character is properly fed and hydrated. These are natural things, and they need to be addressed over time, since you are not controlling a robot (in which case eating and drinking would not be as important).
Dune: Awakening is not far away (Funcom will release it for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series), so these are interesting results…
