Split Fiction – Two Heroines, Two Universes, One Shared Adventure?

PREVIEW – Split Fiction is the latest creation from Hazelight Studios, the developers behind the groundbreaking cooperative game It Takes Two.  Yes, after crafting the essential game for couples and best friends, the studio is back to deliver another two-player masterpiece. This time, they’ve traded the cartoonish universe for a blend of science fiction and fantasy in a visually stunning world.

In this game, you’ll step into the shoes of two writers (one specializing in sci-fi, the other in fantasy) who must work together to escape a simulation that has trapped them in each other’s stories. Featuring levels that alternate between dystopian landscapes and dragon-filled quests, Split Fiction has easily secured a spot on our list of the most anticipated games of 2025. It promises to be just as captivating as It Takes Two was back then. In fact, we’re almost certain that this will be the best cooperative game of the year.

To prepare you for another cooperative masterpiece, we’ve compiled all the latest news regarding Split Fiction below, including details about its release date, gameplay, story, and much more.

Split Fiction’s Release

The good news is that Split Fiction’s release date has been confirmed: it’s coming on March 6, 2025, and will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. This major announcement, along with a breathtaking trailer, was revealed at The Game Awards 2024. Fans of It Takes Two have been eagerly awaiting a new game from Hazelight Studios since 2021, so the surprise reveal of Split Fiction, along with its imminent release date, feels like a huge gift for 2025.

Split Fiction’s Platforms

Split Fiction will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and the EA App upon its launch in March 2025. Similar to It Takes Two, a “Friend’s Pass” will be available. This means only one of you will need to purchase the game to play together online.

The big news is that Split Fiction’s Friend’s Pass will also enable cross-platform play between PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam – something that It Takes Two didn’t offer. So, if one of you is a console player and the other a PC gamer, you can both use your preferred platform! While no release on Nintendo Switch has been announced yet, It Takes Two did arrive on the Switch a year after its initial launch – so there’s a chance we might see the game there in the future as well. Stay tuned for more details!

Split Fiction’s Story

Split Fiction tells the tale of two authors, Mio and Zoe. Mio writes science fiction, while Zoe dedicates herself to fantasy. The two writers are complete strangers, but fate soon brings them together when they find themselves trapped in a simulation. What is this simulation, you ask? Well, Split Fiction begins after the two amateur writers partner with a tech company that has proposed using their stories in its new product, capable of simulating worlds for readers.

However, during the initial process, an accident occurs, resulting in the two authors being sucked into the system. They will have to work together to escape the simulation that now throws them back and forth between their respective stories – one being a sci-fi world, the other a high-fantasy adventure filled with dragons and giants.

Split Fiction Gameplay

Split Fiction is a cooperative game entirely designed to be experienced by two players. This means it’s not competitive, and player 2 is not just a helpful ghost accompanying you throughout the story – they are a full partner and just as crucial to finishing the game. Like It Takes Two, Split Fiction is a linear action-adventure game with core platforming elements. We also anticipate, as with its predecessor, that mini-games will appear during the levels. What we do know, however, is that it has all the makings of one of the best adventure games of 2025.

During The Game Awards, the trailer for Split Fiction promised a “unique mechanic for each level.” This is similar to It Takes Two, which also offered mechanics specific to each world. However, instead of shooting flaming goo at wasps as in It Takes Two, in Split Fiction, you’ll experience gameplay specific to each genre that fits perfectly with the game’s sci-fi and fantasy themes.

Based on the trailer, we know there will be a level where you have to raise dragons, then use them to fly and navigate platforms. We also saw magnetized orbs in the sci-fi levels that allow you to roll on walls and transform while platforming. There will be boss fights, shooting mechanics, and, best of all, a level where you play as pigs.
