NINTENDO NEWS – Developers don’t have to play a “puzzle” like they did with the original Nintendo Switch, which is now eight years old.
Automaton interviewed a number of Japanese developers. They’ve ported games to the Switch before, and were asked about the difficulties they’ve encountered in porting to Nintendo’s hardware, and what they expect from the platform that the big N has already announced, but which has yet to have a release date or price. The processor was mentioned most often, as it was running at full capacity, so the CPU couldn’t load things in the background, forcing developers to optimize it whenever possible, or forgo optimization, often resulting in degraded performance in games (ports).
This will be remedied with the Nintendo Switch 2’s more powerful processor, allowing developers to load things in the background. Another weakness of the Switch, according to developers, was RAM. The Nintendo Switch only had 4GB of memory, which made it difficult to develop games for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which have 8GB of RAM. One developer who was working on an open-world RPG said that developing with RAM was a bit of a challenge for them. They had to compress textures as much as possible to save as much RAM as possible, and the better they got at that, the better their game looked.
Developers are all waiting on pins and needles for Nintendo Switch 2 because of the better hardware. Those who mainly develop for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series have pointed out that it’s really high time for a new console, because with better hardware it will be easier to port from the big N to the new console.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will get its own Nintendo Direct on April 3. Here, the Japanese company will confirm when the console will be available for purchase and for how much. Rumors say it will cost $400.
