Concerns arose that NetEase’s recent shake-ups could put the most ambitious open-world Star Wars game in danger, but the project remains unaffected. Guillaume de Fondaumière, CEO of Quantic Dream, has assured fans that the Chinese tech giant’s restructuring won’t impact their studio or its ongoing developments.
NetEase is navigating turbulent waters. The Chinese gaming behemoth is streamlining its operations, prioritizing only the projects it deems surefire financial successes. It even considered pulling the plug on Marvel Rivals before launch over a dispute with Disney. The company’s ongoing restructuring has cast uncertainty over several of its foreign studios, including Quantic Dream. But to put concerned players at ease, the studio’s CEO has now confirmed that NetEase’s corporate strategy won’t interfere with their work.
Guillaume de Fondaumière took to LinkedIn to provide much-needed clarity about Quantic Dream’s position: “We were deeply saddened by the recent layoffs and studio closures within some of NetEase’s divisions. Our thoughts go out to those affected, and we hope they find new opportunities soon.” The executive continued, “David Cage and I are grateful to the fans and friends who have reached out to us over the past few days regarding Quantic Dream.”
“We want to reassure everyone that our teams in Paris and Montreal remain completely unaffected [by NetEase’s restructuring]. Our projects are progressing at full speed, and we’re still hiring for multiple positions at both locations.” He went on to explain, “Quantic Dream was founded 28 years ago, and we continue to uphold the vision David and I set in 2019, when NetEase first acquired a minority stake in our company. Over the past six years, NetEase has been a committed partner, providing us with creative freedom and the financial backing needed to grow and thrive.”
History backs up de Fondaumière’s claims. Quantic Dream has delivered hits like Detroit: Become Human and recorded its best financial year in 2024. So, despite NetEase’s shifting business priorities, the studio’s projects are on solid ground: “Development of our current games is proceeding as planned, and we remain fully dedicated to delivering innovative, high-quality titles in the years to come.”
The Blood of Dawnwalker Also Unaffected by NetEase’s Changes
Quantic Dream isn’t the only studio reassuring its community amid NetEase’s restructuring. Rebel Wolves, a studio formed by former CD Projekt RED developers working on the highly anticipated RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker, has also confirmed that its game is safe. The team has secured funding independently, meaning NetEase’s corporate shifts won’t disrupt its development.
