Kojima Apologizes in Advance: Death Stranding 2 Will Have a “Ridiculous” Character That Might Make You Throw Your Controller

“I’ll say sorry ahead of time.” Hideo Kojima warns fans that Death Stranding 2 will introduce a character so “absurd” that players might just rage-quit. Higgs’ return promises to be even wilder, and Kojima himself admits it might test players’ patience.

Hideo Kojima has once again captivated the gaming world by unveiling a stunning new trailer for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach during a special panel at SXSW 2025. The latest footage offers a deeper dive into the game’s bizarre universe of connections, enigmatic figures, and supernatural forces. However, the biggest surprise of the event was undoubtedly the return of Higgs, who has undergone a major transformation—so much so that Kojima himself can only describe him as “ridiculous.”

Higgs, played once again by Troy Baker, became the focal point of much discussion at SXSW due to his dramatically altered appearance and personality. Kojima didn’t hold back in describing just how over-the-top the character has become: “Higgs isn’t just twice or three times more extreme—he’s a hundred times more insane than he was in Death Stranding 1,” Kojima explained during the presentation (via GamingBolt). “By the end, you’ll be looking at Higgs and thinking, ‘What the hell am I even watching?’ And I bet some of you will throw your controllers. It’s that absurd. So, yeah… I’ll apologize in advance.”

The director went on to explain why Higgs is making a comeback in the first place: “Higgs was so beloved that I just couldn’t bring myself to kill him off,” Kojima admitted. “So yeah, he’s back. But he’s not just any villain—he’s an icon in his own right. So I figured, why not dial him up to eleven?”

Kojima Is Building an Insane World With Insane Characters

During the discussion, Troy Baker chimed in to highlight the collaborative effort behind the game’s development. He emphasized that the cast isn’t just lending their voices—they’re helping bring Kojima’s strange, immersive world to life. “When you’re building a world like the one Hideo envisions, we’re all working to match the incredible reality that exists inside his head,” Baker explained. “It’s a mind-blowing world, filled with mind-blowing characters, and our job is to bring them to life, step by step, scene by scene.”
