Greg Rice, head of PlayStation’s Creators Program, believes that studios shouldn’t worry about launching games near Rockstar’s open-world behemoth. “There will be successful games around GTA 6’s release because they offer something completely different.”
It’s undeniable—Grand Theft Auto VI is the most anticipated game of 2025. Publishers are closely watching Take-Two for an exact release date, currently expected in Fall 2025, so they can plan their own launch schedules accordingly. Many fear that dropping their games anywhere near Rockstar’s colossal franchise could result in disastrous sales. After all, for weeks, GTA 6 will dominate the gaming scene. But while this concern is widely shared across the industry, a PlayStation executive believes the situation is not as dire as some might think.
Greg Rice, who leads PlayStation’s Creators Program and primarily works with indie developers, discussed the topic during a chat with GamesRadar+ at the Game Developers Conference. “GTA 6 is going to be the biggest and most spectacular game of the year, that’s a fact,” Rice admitted. “But I hear the opposite from developers—they’re nervous that [GTA 6] will completely dominate the conversation. ‘I don’t want to launch anywhere near GTA 6 because that’s all people are going to be playing.’”
Rice acknowledges that GTA 6 will sell millions of copies, but he also believes the industry is mature enough to sustain multiple hits. “There will absolutely be games launching around [GTA 6’s release] that will do well because they provide something totally different,” he explained. In his view, Rockstar’s blockbuster won’t just overshadow competitors—it will also help reignite engagement across the entire gaming ecosystem.
GTA 6 Will Drive Players Toward the Next Generation of Gaming
Beyond its immediate impact, Rice sees GTA 6 as a key moment for the industry. “I’m sure a lot of players will only be playing GTA 6,” he acknowledged, “but at the same time, it’s going to be an opportunity [for many gamers] to step into the next generation and explore what else is out there.”
Rather than seeing GTA 6 as competition for smaller titles, Rice believes its release will serve as an economic boost for gaming as a whole. “It’s going to be a multi-billion-dollar title, but I don’t think it will be competing with indie games.” Of course, the true impact remains to be seen—Fall 2025 will reveal just how much GTA 6 shifts the market.
