MOVIE NEWS – “They wanted money, not to make good series”: Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos delivers a sharp jab at Marvel in light of Daredevil’s return. The executive recalls a bitter creative struggle over superhero shows that still leaves a bad taste.
At the very moment when Marvel Studios’ MCU was conquering cinemas worldwide, Netflix entered into a bold partnership with Disney to create a slate of superhero shows featuring iconic Marvel characters. For a while, it worked exceptionally well. Within just a few months, the platform was home to some of the genre’s finest offerings. But it all came to an end in 2019, when Netflix shelved the entire Marvel lineup—including the beloved Daredevil. What went wrong?
While much was written at the time, Variety recently sat down with Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos to revisit those turbulent years of constant creative battles with Marvel Television.
“To make these shows, we had to deal with the old regime of Marvel Television, which operated independently and was quite thrifty. Every time we wanted one of these shows to take a step forward, we had to put a lot of effort into them and we had opposite intentions. They wanted money, and we wanted to make good series with which we could earn that money.”
“What [Marvel] didn’t spend, it kept.”
“Every time we wanted to add something to the series to improve it, it was a fistfight,” the executive added. Eventually, Netflix decided it would be best for both sides to part ways. Sarandos says they took that lesson seriously, pivoting toward producing their own original series where financial goals and creative vision could align. He claims Marvel’s producers simply “kept” anything not spent on production.
The agreement between Marvel Television and Disney brought us Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and the crossover series The Defenders, which united the lead characters in one shared storyline. Many of these heroes have now returned to the screen with Daredevil: Born Again, a revival that’s delivering exactly what fans had been waiting for.
