Anshar Studios and 3D Realms have announced a reimagining of the two-decade-old Painkiller series for current-gen consoles in addition to PC.
The classic Painkiller franchise is back! Battle your way through Purgatory in fast-paced cooperative action, wielding infernal weapons against relentless demonic hordes. Damned for your sins, the voice of the Creator offers you a chance at redemption. Will you take it or be lost to darkness? Painkiller is a reimagining of the classic franchise, featuring cooperative play for up to three players and full offline support. Battle hordes of demons and titanic horrors in richly detailed gothic environments.
Trapped in Purgatory, you are punished for your transgressions against Heaven. But the voice of the Creator gives you a chance to redeem yourself. As one of the Champions, you must stop the fallen angel Azazel from unleashing his demonic armies on Earth. You will face hordes of enemies, demons with unique powers, and three monstrous children of Azazel – the Nephilim. Will you succeed in your mission and earn your salvation? Jump, dash, and grapple your way through vast biomes while battling enemies with a variety of new and classic Painkiller weapons in Purgatory, your playground. Unleash the pain by using tarot cards to enhance your abilities and combine them with other players to obliterate your foes. Choose from four characters: Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch, whose abilities range from Energy, Health, Strength, and Damage.
Originally developed by People Can Fly (the Polish studio will be featured later in today’s news), Painkiller was released by DreamCatcher Interactive for PC in April 2004 and Xbox in July 2006 (X360 was out at the time…). And the remastered Painkiller from Anshar Studios is coming this fall for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC. It looks interesting so far.
