Civilization 7 Update Makes Big Moves After Rocky Launch

Although the strategy game had a bumpy start, Civilization 7 is improving rapidly, shaped directly by player feedback. Firaxis Games has demonstrated a clear commitment to its community with the release of update 1.1.1.

The Civilization franchise is usually praised for its quality, but the launch of Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 was far from smooth. Initial reviews on Steam were mixed at best, and while some balance has returned over the weeks, the general sentiment remains divided. To address this, the American developer has rolled out update 1.1.1, focusing entirely on community-driven improvements.

Firaxis had already stated post-launch that upcoming patches would be shaped solely around community feedback. To support this, the team temporarily paused development of major content expansions and instead turned its attention to polishing core gameplay through smaller yet meaningful updates.

Map Tweaks, Game Restarts, and UI Refinements

One major change in version 1.1.1 is how maps are generated. The new default mode, “Standard,” offers more organic continental placement, reminiscent of Civilization 6. The previous default is now called “Balanced” and remains the go-to for multiplayer matches. Firaxis also noted plans to expand map diversity in future updates, potentially including even larger world sizes.

Another long-awaited feature is the reset button. Players can now restart games in the opening turns with the same map and leader settings. However, this option becomes unavailable after entering a new era or when playing multiplayer. Additionally, unit health bars have become easier to read, terrain tooltips have been enhanced, and district attacks now trigger clearer notifications.

New Civilizations and Leaders Join the Fight

The “Crossroads of the World Collection” expansion introduces three fresh additions: Simón Bolívar, a leader oriented toward military conquests; Bulgaria, a civ focused on domination mechanics; and Nepal, which thrives in diplomacy and culture thanks to its mountainous geography. While this content might seem to contradict Firaxis’s earlier pledge, it actually satisfies the community’s demand for greater variety.

Looking ahead, Firaxis has confirmed that version 1.2.0 will arrive in April. The update is set to include the anticipated “One More Turn” mode alongside further user interface enhancements.
