Of course, Rebellion’s post-apocalyptic game achieved this with a bit of trickery, so it’s not in as good a position as Monster Hunter Wilds.
Rebellion announced yesterday that Atomfall has already reached over one and a half million players in its opening weekend. The single-player survival action game has been released for current-gen consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series) and PC, and has also been available on Xbox Game Pass since its launch on March 27. That means Rebellion has racked up one and a half million players in five days (and it could be more if they weren’t pushing Denuvo on PC).
“We are thrilled that so many players are enjoying Atomfall. Passing one million players in such a short time speaks volumes about the creativity and dedication of the entire team here at Rebellion. Our size and stability means that we can take risks to create something as different as Atomfall. Fortunately, that risk is paying off. We are a British company and the game is a true reflection of that. Not only is it set in the lush, beautiful countryside, but Atomfall is also inspired by so many classic British books, movies and TV series. We hope players continue to enjoy exploring the world of Atomfall and look forward to future content for the game,” said Jason Kingsley, CEO and co-founder of Rebellion.
The most popular post-apocalyptic game is Fallout, but it’s not set in the UK, it’s set in the US. Fallout: London, which brings the franchise to foggy Albion, was a bridge to that. Atomfall was announced just before the full conversion mod was released during the 2024 Xbox Summer Showcase, so now we have two visions of how the developers envision the post-apocalyptic island nation.
So what’s the trick? Xbox Game Pass. This is a service that, for a subscription fee (usually at the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate level), makes a certain dedicated portion of games available from the day they are released.
