Aspyr’s project has yet to be officially announced, but it has been certified for Valve’s handheld PC…
The backend updates for Neverwinter Nights 2 Enhanced Edition have been recorded on SteamDB, and we’ve learned that Obsidian Entertainment’s remaster of the 2006 classic is now Steam Deck verified. The members were updated on April 3rd, and it’s not Beamdog (the team that worked on the Infinity Engine and Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition in the past), but Aspyr. They’ve worked on remasters of the Star Wars and Tomb Raider franchises, which is why Obsidian’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 made it to modern platforms.
Neverwinter Nights 2 could use a remaster, as its technical and graphical ambitions make it a much more demanding title than the first installment. For now, the only thing to worry about is the full version of the game, which is not available on Steam, but is available on GOG. It’s a pain to play. The interface requires a magnifying glass at resolutions higher than 1080p, and it often crashes when you change the resolution in-game, requiring a rewrite of the ini file. This is not a very comfortable solution.
The scripts, the artificial intelligence, could still be improved, some of them were very broken in previous campaigns with the release of later expansions. The handling could also be improved, but the fact that Steam Deck authentication has been implemented is certainly a good sign, as the game never had proper controller support. Although the original version could be played on a Steam Deck, the controller does not properly replace the mouse and keyboard.
If the remaster gets full mod support, that would be for the best, although Neverwinter Nights 2 never had the mod scene that the first game did. The improved version of the Aurora Engine used in NwN2 (the Electron Engine) played a role in this, but the second part can still be expanded with custom campaigns…
